Why use PDFHaul to remove
duplicate pages?
Duplicate detection
Each page is checked two ways: an exact match, and a content match that catches pages that differ in compression, generation method, or a shift or rotation. Exact matches are flagged as duplicates. Content matches are flagged as "likely duplicate". Both are held for you to confirm, so nothing is removed without review.
Review before removing
You see every flagged page before anything is deleted. Choose exactly which duplicates to remove. No pages are touched without your confirmation.
Original quality preserved
The remaining pages are exact copies of the originals. Nothing is re-rendered or re-compressed. Your document comes out exactly as it went in, just without the duplicates.
Files deleted in 2 hours
Your documents are automatically purged from our servers within 2 hours. Not stored, not analysed, not sold.
Who needs to remove
duplicate PDF pages?
Duplicate pages most commonly appear in PDFs that were assembled from multiple sources or produced by scanners and automated systems.
01
Scanned document batches
Double-feeding in a scanner is a common hardware issue that inserts duplicate pages into scanned PDFs without you noticing. Clean up an entire scanned batch in one step.
02
Merged documents
When merging PDFs from different sources (reports, contracts, appendices), it is easy to end up with the same cover page, terms page, or section header appearing multiple times.
03
Legal document bundles
Court bundles and disclosure packs often contain the same exhibit or reference document multiple times because it was attached to several different submissions. Strip the duplicates before filing.
04
Large reports and templates
Reports built from templates sometimes repeat boilerplate pages across sections. Remove the repeated pages to reduce file size and give the reader a cleaner document to navigate.
How duplicate detection works
Two checks, then you decide
Page 11 was saved again and sits slightly lower on the page, so the two renders differ. The text and images still match.
- 1
Render each page
Every page is drawn as an image, and its text layer is read in reading order.
- 2
Exact check
DuplicateA page that renders identically to an earlier page.
- 3
Content check
Likely duplicateSame words in the same order, and the same images once the text is set aside. Catches pages that were re-saved by another program, recompressed, shifted, or turned sideways.
- 4
Same layout, different information
KeptPages that look alike but carry different text or numbers, like two invoices with different totals.
- 5
You review
Every flagged page is shown before anything is removed. Deselect any page you want to keep.
Duplicate detection compares each page against every other page in the document. Pages that are pixel-identical are flagged as exact duplicates. Pages that differ in compression, generation method, or a shift or rotation, but match in content, are flagged as likely duplicates and held for your review before anything is removed.
This is most useful for PDFs assembled from multiple sources, where the same cover page, disclaimer, or blank separator was included more than once. It is also common in PDFs generated from database exports where the same record appears twice.
Duplicate detection is based on content matching, not page position. The first occurrence of a duplicated page is kept; subsequent duplicates are removed. The remaining pages are re-ordered to fill the gaps.
Pages that are visually similar but carry different information (the same invoice template with a different invoice number or amount, for example) are not flagged, even though they look alike at a glance. Detection matches on content, not just appearance, so it tells the difference between a true duplicate and a page that only resembles one.
Scanned pages with no text layer are only matched when they are identical, so two separate scans of the same sheet are not flagged yet.
Test it yourself
Can a duplicate-page remover actually find every duplicate?
We publish test PDFs with known duplicate pages and public answer keys, so you can check any tool yourself, including ours.
Duplicate test PDF
Exact duplicates mixed with look-alike pages that must not be flagged. A quick check of whether a tool finds the obvious cases without false alarms.

Duplicate detection challenge set
Copies saved by other programs, recompressed, shifted and turned sideways, plus rescans and invoices that only look alike. The answer key lists 8 duplicate pages; PDFHaul does not catch all of them, and the article shows which it misses.
