Who uses
PDF splitting?
Splitting PDFs is essential whenever one document contains sections that need to be shared separately.
01
Legal & contracts
Extract specific exhibits, signature pages, or schedules from a large contract bundle before sending to a counterparty or filing with a court. Share only what is relevant.
02
Finance & accounting
Separate a single bank statement or invoice PDF into individual monthly files for expense reporting, accounting software uploads, or audit submissions.
03
Students & researchers
Extract the specific chapters or sections you need from a large textbook or research paper PDF so you can annotate just the relevant pages without carrying the full document.
04
Small businesses
Split a combined proposal or portfolio PDF into standalone sections to share with different stakeholders. Send the pricing page to finance and the case studies to the client.
How PDF splitting works
Splitting creates new, independent PDF files from a subset of pages in the original document. The source file is not modified. Each output file is a complete, valid PDF containing only the pages you specified.
PDFHaul offers two splitting approaches. Page ranges let you define groups of pages that each become a separate file. For example, pages 1-5, 6-10, and 11-15 each become their own document. Page extraction lets you specify individual page numbers to pull out, with each becoming its own file.
Internal hyperlinks that point to specific page numbers may break depending on which output file the target page ends up in. A link on page 3 that points to page 12 will remain in the document and still appear clickable, but if page 12 ends up in a different output file, clicking the link will not navigate correctly. This is unavoidable. PDF hyperlinks reference page numbers within a specific file, and splitting changes what those numbers mean.
Bookmarks are not carried into split output files. If the original document had a bookmark outline, the split files will not inherit it. Password-protected PDFs cannot be split; remove password protection first.
