Who converts
PDF to Excel?

Financial, research, and operational data locked in PDFs becomes immediately usable once extracted to a spreadsheet.

01

Financial reports and statements

Bank statements, income statements, and balance sheets sent as PDFs, including old paper statements that were scanned, can be converted to Excel for analysis, comparison, and financial modelling without manual data entry. OCR handles the scanned ones automatically.

02

Research and survey data

Research reports, government statistics, and survey results distributed as PDFs often contain tables that need to be analysed. Convert once and manipulate freely in a spreadsheet.

03

Inventory and pricing lists

Supplier price lists and product catalogues sent as PDFs can be converted to editable spreadsheets for comparison, filtering, and integration with your own data.

04

Legal and compliance data

Contracts, regulatory filings, and audit reports often contain structured data tables. Extract them to Excel for record-keeping, tracking, and reporting.

How PDF to Excel conversion works

PDFHaul extracts table data from PDFs that contain a machine-readable text layer and attempts to reconstruct it as rows and columns in an .xlsx spreadsheet. The accuracy of extraction depends on how the table was structured in the original PDF.

PDFs created from Excel or similar applications embed the data with clean column boundaries and consistent cell alignment. These extract reliably. PDFs where tables were created by positioning text manually (using spaces and tabs rather than actual table structures), look like tables visually but have no underlying structure for the extractor to follow. These produce inconsistent results.

Scanned PDFs don't have a text layer at all: each page is a photograph of the table, not machine-readable characters. PDFHaul detects this automatically and runs the page through OCR (optical character recognition) first, recognizing the actual text and numbers, before handing the result to the same table-detection process used for any other PDF. This is included free, with no separate OCR fee or usage limit. Because OCR works from pixels rather than exact PDF coordinates, this works best on tables with real, visible grid lines; tables that rely purely on tight spacing to imply structure, with no borders at all, are harder to reconstruct correctly once the text has gone through recognition, the same limitation that already applies to non-scanned PDFs with spacing-only tables.

Numbers extracted from PDFs are frequently formatted as text in the output spreadsheet. Excel may not automatically recognise them as numeric values. If your extracted numbers are left-aligned in cells or show a green triangle warning, use Excel's "Convert to Number" option to fix the formatting before using the data in formulas.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about converting PDFs to Excel

Yes. When a page has no real text layer, PDFHaul recognizes the text and numbers automatically using OCR (optical character recognition) before looking for table structure, so scanned invoices, statements, and reports can be extracted the same way as a native, text-based PDF. This is included free, with no separate OCR fee, paid tier, or daily limit.
