How fillable PDF forms work in PDFHaul
A fillable PDF form is a document with AcroForm fields embedded in it: text boxes, checkboxes, radio buttons, and dropdowns that any PDF reader recognizes as interactive, not just PDFHaul. PDFHaul supports both directions: filling in fields that already exist in a PDF you upload, and creating those fields yourself on a document that doesn't have any yet, including a completely blank page.
These two directions behave differently on purpose. Filling in an existing form always flattens the result on export: your typed values are burned into the page permanently, because the point of filling a form is submitting a completed one. Creating fields is the opposite: the fields you place stay live, interactive AcroForm objects in the exported PDF, because the point of building a form is handing someone else something they can fill in, in whichever PDF reader they use.
Field names have to be unique within a document. That's a PDF specification requirement, not a PDFHaul limitation. Two fields sharing a name are treated as one field with two on-page locations by most readers. PDFHaul auto-suggests a unique name for every new field, so this only becomes relevant when you deliberately give two fields the same name to link them, which is exactly how radio button groups work: each button is a separate field, and buttons sharing a group name combine into one set of mutually exclusive choices on export.
Repeatable text and images work by embedding the same content on every page at export time, rather than being a special page-template feature. A repeating text box can include {page} and {pages} tokens, which are replaced with the real page number and total page count separately for each page, so a single text box becomes correct page numbering across the whole document.
Field appearances currently render with a standard Latin font. Labels or values you type that fall outside the Latin/WinAnsi character set may not display correctly within the field itself, though the rest of the document's content is unaffected. This is a known limitation, not a bug. Support for broader character sets is on the roadmap.
